See how flour is milled the ancient way at the Town Mill then join Giselle to learn three delicious bread recipes that are a little bit 'extra'.

Experience

10:00am - 11:30pm. Class - Session 1

After coffee and introductions, the class starts at Strawberry Tree where we will make:

  • Challah - a soft, brioche-like bread rich in symbolism and history
  • Chocolate Babka bread, a sweet, layered international favourite

While these are proving and baking, we will head over to the Town Mill next door.

11:30am - 12:15am. Mill Tour

Enjoy an exclusive guided tour of the adjoining Town Mill; a pre-Domesday water-powered mill dating back to at least 1340, the time of Edward III.

  • We will visit the Stone Floor, Sack Floor & Meal Floor
  • A miller will share about the history, restoration and present day working of the Mill
  • We will see the waterwheel in action, powering half-ton millstones grinding grain into flour
  • See a demonstration of the milling process and how flour is made the traditional way
  • Get hands-on, raising a sack hoist and milling grain

12:15pm - 1:00pm. Class - Session 2

Back in the Strawberry Tree, Giselle will demonstrate and give us some hands-on tasks as we create:

  • Torrijas, Spanish-style French toast

You will then glaze and finish off your chocolate babka bread. You will take away:

   • Your own finished challah bread and some challah dough ready to cook at home
   • Your own finished chocolate babka bread and some babka dough ready to cook at home
   • Sweet Torrijas dessert

*A note about the discounted price for two people - this discount simply reflects two people sharing a workstation and the cooking tasks and takeaway goodies – no arguing, please!

NB. Please note that our workshops sometimes use induction hobs which are not recommended for people with pacemakers. Please contact us if you have any concerns.
