Experience

12.30pm - 2.30pm

Sherries must be some of the world’s most under-rated, versatile and fascinating wines. They include some of the very driest wines; some of the very sweetest – and everything in between. Moreover, these wines make great partners for all kinds of foods.

Join us for a five-course tapas lunch with paired sherries and tutored tastings from sherry revolutionary Antonio Moronés of Diatomists Wines. We are delighted to be welcoming Antonio back to Strawberry Tree to share in his charm, infectious enthusiasm and knowledge.

A new era in Sherry - Terroir driven wines and singular botas

Diatomists was founded by three friends - Antonio from Jerez, George from Oxford, and Tommy from Barcelona - who share a passion for wine produced in the Appellation of Jerez and have over 20 years combined experience in the wine trade, the Diatomists team explore every corner of this southernmost point of Andalucia in search of winemakers committed to excellence.

Antonio Morenés Bertrán comes from a long line of sherry producers. In fact, he would have been 7th generation had his father not left the region in the early 80’s as he anticipated the crash that was to follow in the 90’s. 40 years later Antonio is back in the trade and he is fast becoming the ambassador of the new wave of sherry wines in the UK. You can take the Jerezano out of Jerez, but you can’t take sherry out of the Jerezano!

Lunch

A five course tapas lunch featuring three savoury courses, a cheese course and dessert.

The wines to be introduced by maker Antonio Morenés, co-founder of Diatomists and leader of the Sherry Revolution! He will give a brief oversight of the region and will explain each wine. Although Antonio is coming from a well established tradition, he looks only forward.  Diatomists are fast becoming the flagship for the new wave wines of Jerez - putting the region back where it belongs.

About Diatomists sherries:

Jerez was one of the first wine growing regions in Spain to distinguish their wines through the provenance of the grapes. However, in the second half of the 20th century all the focus went to the bodega and the solera system, with local enologists claiming that the identity of the soil and grapes became unrecognisable following maturation in bota (barrel).

Today things are changing, a new wave of winemakers are determined to put the soil and the fruit back in the spotlight, producing wine that clearly reflects the vines’ terroir alongside the solera in which it matured: wine that proves that whilst quality and consistency are achieved through the bodega, excellence is in the soil.

We love fresh, floral and fruit driven wine. All our biologically aged wine can be traced back to the soil where the grapes were grown. Our barrel-aged range is made up of carefully selected botas chosen for their freshness in harmony with oxidative flavours. Our goal is to select, ship and share fresh white wine with abundant fruit, complimented either by the flor, in the case of biologically aged wines, or the bota, in our barrel-aged range. www.diatomists.co.uk
